General Atlantic has been actively involved with philanthropic organizations since our founding in 1980.
General Atlantic was established in 1980 by Chuck Feeney, a co-founder of Duty Free Shoppers Group and today one of the world’s leading living philanthropists. Chuck donated substantially all of his assets to the Atlantic Philanthropies and was GA’s first capital partner. GA has since expanded its funding sources to other wealthy families, well-established endowments, foundations and strategic institutions.
The philanthropic ties of the GA team continue today, with an ethos focused not just on professional pursuits but also on community involvement. In 1988, GA founded Echoing Green, a non-profit organization which identifies, funds and supports high-impact social entrepreneurs. To date, Echoing Green has provided seed funding to over 500 social entrepreneurs and their innovative organizations, including Teach for America, City Year, Citizen Schools, College Summit and EarthRights International.
The GA team dedicates time and energy to philanthropic organizations that they believe can positively impact society, and many of our professionals serve on the boards of non-profit and educational organizations.
