The Gold Spike Award is the highest annual honor for volunteer service at Stanford, recognizing decades of exceptional and significant service to the University. With this award, Steve, a member of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Class of 1978 and former Chairman of the Stanford University Board of Trustees, was recognized as a force on and off campus who brings people together, helps shape big ideas, and builds bridges from Stanford to the world. Steve has collaborated with Stanford presidents, academic leaders, and fellow alumni to pioneer interdisciplinary research and teaching and to bolster the University’s global impact.

Upon receiving the award, Steve commented that the University plays “a pivotal role in research and discovery, and in the development of a vibrant global innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem” and because of this, “service to Stanford is a means of giving back to the world and striving to improve the human condition.”
