General Atlantic, a leading global growth equity firm, announced today that Achim Berg, former Chief Executive Officer of arvato AG, will join General Atlantic as an Operating Partner effective April 1, 2016. Mr. Berg will work closely with the firm’s portfolio companies both in Germany and globally. He will be based in General Atlantic’s Munich office.

Mr. Berg most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of arvato AG, a leading provider of media and business communications and technology services, which is subsidiary of German media conglomerate Bertelsmann SE. In this role, he was responsible for the strategy and operative business of Bertelsmann’s largest division with 70,000 employees. He also served as a member of the Executive Board of Bertelsmann. Mr. Berg also serves as Vice President and a member of the Executive Board of BITKOM, Germany’s Federal Association of Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media.

Prior to arvato, Mr. Berg held a number of senior management positions at Microsoft, most recently as Corporate Vice President of the Windows Phone division at the U.S. corporate headquarters, and before that, General Manager of Microsoft Germany and Area Vice President of Microsoft International. Prior to this, Mr. Berg served on the Executive Board of T-Com, Europe’s largest telecommunications company, where he was responsible for the marketing and sales of landlines. Earlier in his career, Mr. Berg worked at Fujitsu Siemens Computers GmbH, Dell Deutschland GmbH and Bull AG. Mr. Berg completed his studies in computer science in 1989 in Cologne and completed the European Potential Management Program at the European Economic School.

Achim Berg war zuletzt Vorstandsvorsitzender der arvato AG. Das Tochterunternehmen des Medienkonzerns Bertelsmann SE ist einer der führenden Anbieter von Dienstleistungen in den Bereichen Medien, Businesskommunikation und Technologie. In dieser Position war er verantwortlich für die Strategie und das operative Geschäft von Bertelsmanns größtem Geschäftsbereich mit 70.000 Angestellten. Er war zugleich Mitglied des Bertelsmann-Vorstands. Achim Berg ist auch Vizepräsident und Mitglied des Vorstands von BITKOM, dem Branchenverband der deutschen Informations- und Telekommunikationsbranche.

Vor seiner Zeit bei arvato hatte Achim Berg eine Reihe von Führungspositionen bei Microsoft inne, zuletzt als Corporate Vice President der Sparte Windows Phone in der US-Zentrale und davor als General Manager von Microsoft Deutschland und Area Vice President von Microsoft International. Davor war als Mitglied des Vorstands der Deutschen Telekom, Europas größtem Telekommunikationsunternehmen, für Marketing und Vertrieb von Festnetzanschlüssen in der Sparte T-Com verantwortlich. Frühere berufliche Stationen waren unter anderem Fujitsu Siemens Computers GmbH, Dell Deutschland GmbH und Bull AG. Herr Berg absolvierte ein Studium der Informatik (1989 in Köln) und nahm am European Potential Management Program der European Economic School teil.
